Optimization of warehouse management with LMS

Optimization of warehouse management with LMS

In this customer case, we highlight how 4SCM helped optimize warehouse management through LMS.

Situation

In 2022, 4SCM led the design and implementation for a warehouse primarily handling long materials up to 6 meters. The existing warehouse was initially designed for standard pallets, but there was a need for a solution to store materials up to 6 meters long, with dynamic capabilities within this length variation. This required modifications to both the physical infrastructure and the software.

Role

As lead consultant for the project, we were responsible for designing and implementing solutions that met both the client's operational and technical requirements.

Approach

We began by identifying the customer's needs and conducting a thorough analysis of their warehouse processes. We then designed a customized solution: using specific functionalities applicable to the storage of long materials.

We recommended dividing storage locations into sections, as this helps maximize storage capacity. Depending on the products being stored, the system divides a location into sub-locations. For example, one storage location can fit a 6-meter bundle, two 3-meter bundles or three 2-meter bundles. This not only optimizes space, but also increases safety and efficiency in the warehouse.

A key feature of this project? The integration of specialized reach trucks. These trucks are linked to the RF framework in SAP EWM so that they can accurately move materials to their locations and position them semi-autonomously. This minimizes the risk of damage and increases safety when handling long and wide materials of 6 meters. This allows employees to move complex loads safely and efficiently.

This approach combines the SAP ecosystem with a vision of logistics with impact. We are proud of the solution we realized, which increases operational efficiency, minimizes picking errors and supports seamless material handling towards production. With safety as a top priority, this resulted in a well-organized, high-performing warehouse that is perfectly aligned with customer needs.

Result

Thanks to this implementation, warehouse processes have been significantly optimized. Operators can now work more efficiently and space is used optimally. Errors in the picking process have been minimized thanks to the accurate positioning of materials and forklifts. Through interfaces, forklifts are automatically directed to the correct location and forks are positioned in the correct "sub" location.

General

It is important to say that the LMS not only optimizes the inbound and outbound processes of materials, but is also tightly integrated with other business processes, such as production and returns. This creates an integrated system that improves overall operational efficiency and increases customer satisfaction.

The collaboration between various stakeholders, both internal and external, were crucial to the success of the project. Through close collaboration and clear communication, we were able to provide a solution that met the client's specific needs while being future-proof.
